Repair, replace or keep: aparigraha and appliance ownership

A decision path for working appliances, grounded in thoughtful consumption.

Ask four questions

  1. Does it still do the job safely?
  2. Can a repair restore it at reasonable cost?
  3. Would a replacement save enough energy or water to matter?
  4. How will I dispose of the old one responsibly?

Why keeping can be the better choice

Making a new appliance consumes materials and energy. If your current one works, the net benefit of a more efficient model may be small or take years to appear. Aparigraha encourages us to value what we already have.

When replacement makes sense

Safety issues, refrigerant leaks, very high running costs or a lack of available parts may all justify replacement. When you do replace, choose a model that can be repaired and that has a reasonable warranty.

What we know

  • Extending product life tends to reduce overall resource use.

What remains unclear

  • The break-even depends on the appliance, the local electricity supply and the efficiency gain.
