Jain Principles

Draft / Under research

One community, different approaches.

Jain families vary in how they interpret and practise religious commitments. Region, tradition, upbringing, life stage and individual convictions all matter. This website offers transparent information and avoids a one-size-fits-all judgement.

Lay vs ascetic practices

Jain monastic discipline is considerably stricter than the practices followed by most lay households. When reading about Jain teachings, it helps to ask whether a description applies to monks and nuns, to lay followers, or to both. This site is written for lay households and does not describe monastic rules.

Stricter and more flexible approaches

Within the lay community, some households follow strict dietary and household rules, while others observe selected practices on particular days or occasions. Others are guided mainly by values rather than rules. All of these exist, and no ranking is implied here.

How to set personal product filters

Our product finder lets you filter by status and material. You can use it to decide which questions matter to your household. A suggested approach:

  1. Write down which materials or features you want to avoid, and which you are unsure about.
  2. Decide how strongly you weigh each: avoid entirely, prefer to avoid, or note and decide later.
  3. Discuss with your family. If your household has a teacher or community leader you consult, bring them into the discussion.
  4. Use the filters to find products where the evidence fits your priorities, and read what remains unclear.

How we handle contested questions

Where Jain communities hold different views, we present the question, explain the main perspectives we know of and avoid declaring one correct. We separate three things: what a manufacturer has stated, what independent evidence shows, and how a religious principle might apply. Only the first two can be verified; the third is for you.

Good to know

We are not a religious authority. If you need guidance on a religious question, please consult a teacher or elder you trust.

Respectful language guide

  • Avoid describing any practice as the “correct” or “real” Jain approach.
  • Use “some households” and “many people” rather than “Jains do” unless a statement is genuinely universal.
  • Explain Sanskrit and Prakrit terms in plain English the first time they appear.
  • Avoid language that shames people for choices made under practical constraints.

Questions to carry with you

  • Which of these considerations matter most to my household?
  • Who within my community could I consult on a religious question?

What we know

  • Jain practice varies across traditions, regions and households.

What remains unclear

  • Where individual traditions draw lines on modern products is not something this site can settle.
