Draft / Under researchChoosing an energy-efficient refrigerator without overbuying
Right-size first, compare kWh next, and keep what works: a practical approach grounded in aparigraha.
Start with size
Capacity is the biggest lever. A model larger than you need usually uses more energy and encourages over-stocking. Estimate how much you will actually store, including any planned guests, and choose with a small margin.
Compare kWh, not only letters
Label scales have been revised and differ by country, so compare annual consumption figures in kWh for models of similar capacity. Check that the figure is for the exact model and market.
Consider the whole life
- Spare parts availability and warranty length.
- Refrigerant type and end-of-life collection.
- Whether your existing appliance can be repaired.
When to keep your current fridge
A very old appliance may waste enough electricity to justify replacement; a ten-year-old one often does not. Measure its consumption with a plug-in meter if you can, and compare with a candidate model's rated figure before deciding.
What we know
- Capacity and age strongly influence energy use.
- Comparable models can differ noticeably in annual kWh.
What remains unclear
- The exact break-even point between keeping and replacing depends on your electricity source and appliance condition.
